StarTraining offers a range of City & Guilds accredited courses for people who wish to train to teach in FE and beyond. Many of the courses are run on a part-time basis and taught in the evenings to fit in with your current work schedules.

FE institutions and training organisations that have utilised the skills and expertise of National Star’s Teacher Education team include the Royal National College for the Blind, Clarkson Evans, Activate College Kirby, Sense College, MyLife Learning and Gloucestershire Engineering Training to name but a few.

Teaching qualifications

City & Guilds Level 3 Award in Education and Training (QCF) | L3 AET

This is a knowledge-based introduction to teaching and/or training which has no teaching/training practice element. As a result it is suitable for learners who are not currently in a teaching role, as well as those that are.

Learners who complete this course will have an insight into the roles and responsibilities of a teacher/trainer in relation to legislation, equality, diversity and inclusion and meeting the needs of learners.

You will learn how to plan and deliver sessions, using appropriate resources and different teaching methods to meet the needs of a range of different learners. You will also learn about a range of assessment methods and how to give constructive feedback to the learners.

This course is ran regularly at our Ullenwood campus for one evening per week over one term, and includes 48 hours of blended teaching (face-to-face and ‘virtual’) by a highly experienced tutor. It is anticipated that each learner will need to commit a total of 120 hours of study to complete the qualification.

It is possible for us to deliver this popular course on an entirely ‘virtual’ basis or in person for organisations wishing to train a number of staff together. Typically when group face-to-face sessions are provided the National Star team are happy to travel to deliver five days of sessions at the host organisation, which can be split into two blocks of delivery.

Students currently enrolled on the Level 3 course include care workers looking to move into learning support roles, managers wishing to use their skills and expertise to deliver in-house staff training and professionals planning to teach in the further, higher and adult education sector.

City & Guilds Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training (QCF) | L4 CET

This is a first stage teaching qualification which has a teaching / training practice requirement. It is an ‘in service’ qualification designed for those working or wishing to work as teachers or trainers in England.

By studying towards the Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training you will have an insight into the roles and responsibilities of a teacher/trainer in relation to legislation, equality, diversity and inclusion and meeting the needs of learners. You will be able to use initial and diagnostic assessment methods as well as planning and delivering inclusive teaching. The qualification covers the knowledge and skills needed by teachers/trainers in the FE and skills sector.

Units covered include:

  • Understanding roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training
  • Planning to meet the needs of learners in education and training
  • Delivering education and training
  • Assessing learners in education and training
  • Using resources in education and training

The course includes 140 hours of blended teacher input (face-to-face and ‘virtual’) by a highly experienced tutor and self-study. It is anticipated that each learner will need to commit to a total of 360 hours of further study to complete the qualification, which will include three observed teaching sessions and a minimum of 30 hours of teaching practice.

Students currently enrolled on the Level 4 course are considering, or are already working in FE learning support roles or are using the qualification as a springboard for completing their Level 5 qualification.

City & Guilds Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training (QCF) | L5 DET

The ultimate teacher education course, delivered part-time one evening a week, over two years at our Ullenwood campus (both face to face and virtual sessions). The diploma provides the knowledge, understanding and skills required to become a teacher and the work towards Qualified Teacher Learning and Skills status (QTLS) should they meet the required criteria and have been certificated for the L5 DET.

It is an ‘in-service’ qualification designed for those working as post–16 teachers and trainers in England who can deliver a minimum of  100 hours of teaching sessions during the course.

Units covered include:

  • Teaching, learning and assessment in education and training
  • Developing teaching, learning and assessment in education and training
  • Theories, principles and models in education and training
  • Wider professional practice and development in education and training
  • Action research
  • Developing, using and organising resources in a specialist area
  • Action learning for teaching in a specialist area of disability
  • Numeracy and the learners

The course includes 360 hours of blended teacher input (face-to-face and ‘virtual’) by a highly experienced tutor and self-study over two years. At least 100 hours of teaching needs to be logged as part of a learner’s teaching portfolio during the course, with eight teaching sessions being observed as part of the course assessment (4 of which being graded as good or above).

City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate in Learning Support | L3 CLSP

Designed for students who wish to learn, develop and practise the skills required for employment in the learning support sector.

Units covered include:

  • Preparing to support learning
  • Learning Support in lifelong learning contexts
  • Principles of learning support
  • Supporting learners in an area of specialism
  • Supporting learning

The course includes 145 hours of teacher input (face-to-face and virtual) and it is anticipated that each learner will have to commit 300 hours of study to complete the qualification.
