Ella, an ambitious student on National Star’s Personal Development for Positive Contribution pathway, shared her views on inclusive education when she presented at a prestigious national Festival of Education.

Ella, who uses an Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) device to communicate, which enables her to build sentences using eye gaze, took part in a live panel debate at Wellington College’s 15th Festival of Education.

Before the event Ella had received a brief overview of the panel discussion, allowing her to plan her responses and programme them on her device.

Ella, and various supporting students from her class, travelled to Wellington College, Berkshire, where she joined a panel of students to discuss inclusive education. The panel was chaired by comedian and author Francesca Martinez, who has cerebral palsy. The wider panel explored how mainstream education could better support all students.

Ella captivated the audience with her witty responses and took the opportunity to explain that, while her body may not always do what she wants it to, her mind is full of ability. She said that the education system needs to recognise the potential in all young people. Her advocacy was passionate, intelligent, and deeply impactful.

Ella shared: ‘I learnt that, as well as Francesca Martinez, there are more authors out there with cerebral palsy. It made me feel like I can do anything. If I had another chance to do something similar, I would say, ‘Yes!’ because I feel like I am here to teach people about disabilities and how to make us a more inclusive society.’

Ella’s journey is one of strength, self-expression, and emerging self-belief. Her advocacy, determination, and daily achievements allow her to continue to break down barriers, building a future where everyone is seen, heard, and included.
