Partnership success

The unique partnership between The Heart of Worcestershire College and National Star has exceeded all expectations in how it supports young adults with disabilities to learn new skills for adulthood.

Before the partnership was established in September 2024, many post-16 students living in Worcestershire travelled up to 10 hours per week to National Star in Gloucestershire.

One year on, student numbers have more than doubled. Now, eleven young adults with disabilities are benefitting from this innovative partnership, made possible thanks to an initial grant and ongoing support from Worcestershire County Council.

The provision is already winning awards. In March 2025, the partnership won the collaboration award at the Natspec Awards. Natspec is the membership association for organisations which offer specialist provision for students with learning difficulties and disabilities.

Feedback from both students and families has been overwhelmingly positive.

When asked, one student said they had learnt how to speak for themselves for the first time. Another said they understood the need for teamwork and why it is important. Several students reported they had learnt essential life skills for independence, becoming more confident cooking new meals.

Parents are sharing their thoughts too. Lauren’s mum, Eve said: ‘National Star has been a breath of fresh air for my daughter and our family. For the first time we feel that our child is valued and understood which is all we could wish for! Communication is fabulous and the approach to care is collaborative and compassionate. We couldn’t wish for a better placement.’

Tom’s dad, Jacek, added: ‘We couldn’t recommend National Star at the Heart of Worcestershire College highly enough. Tom’s time here has been very positive for all of us as a family. We have seen his world expand with the support of a dedicated and empathetic team. We have always felt that Tom’s wellbeing has been at the forefront of his education experience at National Star, and communication with us has been consistently supportive.’

National Star’s Chief Executive Lynette Barrett said: ‘Putting the needs of students and their families at the heart of this unique partnership is what has made it the success that it is today. Students have all made considerable progress over the past 12 months and I am confident that they will all leave college with the skills needed for a life of growing independence.’
