Poppy, a 24-year-old residential student at Ullenwood, is on the ‘Engaging with the World’ pathway, building confidence, communication, and meaningful connections for life after college.
As a non-verbal student, she expresses herself through vocalisations, movement, and physical interaction. Her Tutor, Carlie Whittaker-Ballard shares: ‘Poppy’s laugh is contagious; she lights up a whole room.’
When overwhelmed, Poppy finds comfort in musical sounds, using tambourines and maracas. If this doesn’t help, she signals distress, allowing her support team to adjust their approach.
With help from the occupational therapy team Poppy follows a structured morning routine. She wakes before 9am, showers, gets dressed, and prepares a fruit smoothie with her support staff, an engaging way to increase her liquid intake. She chooses her outfit, hairstyle, and smoothie ingredients, fostering independence.
Each day includes activities tailored to her development and interests:
- Physiotherapy and Rebound Therapy: Strengthening movement and confidence.
- Speech and Dramatherapy: Enhancing communication and exploration.
- Swimming, Sports and Games: Encouraging fitness and fun.
- Storytime, Music and Ceramics: Stimulating creativity.
- Community Access: Building confidence in public spaces.
Poppy’s journey is one of growth, joy, and discovery, embracing each day with curiosity and confidence.
