Students out in front
Students played a key role in shaping an inclusive experience by testing out the newly designed accessible path in Cheltenham ahead of National Star’s annual Sunrise Walk.

As wheelchair users, their input was vital in ensuring the route met accessibility standards.
Starting at Brownstones Quarry car park, the accessible path takes you to a breathtaking viewpoint overlooking Cheltenham. For the students, reaching the viewpoint for the first time was unforgettable. Their awe and excitement was contagious, and by the end of the route all four had given it their full approval.
On the day of the event, participants arrived in the dark, eager to set off after a safety briefing. A stupendous 167 people walked the 13k route, while 29 took on the 3k accessible route.
As the sunlight illuminated the Cotswolds, the group stood in reflective silence. Some celebrating milestones, others remembering loved ones, and many considering the part they had just played in supporting National Star.
Parents of student Elliott shared: ‘We signed up to support National Star after seeing the incredible progress our son has made since September. We couldn’t be prouder.’
Student Tom who completed the 3k route added: ‘Today I achieved something I never thought was possible. I hope to visit this place again soon.’
Event organiser, Monica Farthing said: ‘Thank you to everyone who took part in this year’s Sunrise Walk. It was great to see so many people supporting our charity – the most we have ever had! All the money raised will go towards funding much needed equipment and resources which will ensure each young person with complex disabilities can realise their aspirations and develop their skills.’
