Harry is on our Skills for Work programme and is gaining a wide variety of skills and experience.

Harry is focusing on learning the skills he needs to apply for work after college. Working with National Star’s customer services team and StarBistro team allows him to practise his communication skills and self-regulation in sensory-stimulating environments.

After a few months, Harry was encouraged to take an external placement at the Holiday Inn. This new role did not come easily, and he faced numerous challenges. However, he was determined to try.

Despite his nerves, Harry was delighted to be accepted as one of the team from day one.

Harry said: ‘I don’t know what comes next, but working here gives me a nice environment to work in and on top of that, I enjoy working with the staff here.’

Akshay, Manager of the Holiday Inn, said: ‘Our partnership with National Star is important. We have built a culture where the team supports all work experience students.

Harry’s tasks include data entry and back-office administration, as well as supporting reception by welcoming and checking in guests.

Mike Youart, Senior Job Coach at National Star, said: ‘Harry is working with various sensory challenges. There are constantly changing faces throughout the day, suitcases being dragged across the floor, and guests wanting your time. Harry is good at taking a few minutes to gather his thoughts and then rejoins the team ready to assist.’

Harry felt incredibly proud of his first solo trip to work, stating: ‘This is the first trip I have made on my own.’
