Job description

StarBistro is no ordinary eating establishment. That’s why we’re looking for a temporary (maternity cover) Assistant Chef/ Mentor who wants to do good with their passion for food.

A group of enthusiastic students with disabilities are using StarBistro at National Star in Ullenwood as the training ground for their future careers. They work in the kitchen, front of house and behind the scenes to develop their hospitality and customer service skills.

So, if you are looking for a new role that has the potential to serve up more job satisfaction than the average Assistant Chef position, join our team! Unusually in catering we expect you to be willing to help out very occasionally at special evening events or at weekends, but the role is mostly Monday to Friday. Your shifts may vary but will generally be an 8.5 hour shift  based around the hours of 7 am – 4pm.

You’ll need to be a motivated self-starter and a first-class team player. You’ll work with the Head Chef and StarBistro Manager, as well as the students, to remind customers why we won the ‘Food/Community Hero Award’ at the Gloucestershire Foodie Awards in 2023.

Primary tasks will involve:

  • Day-to-day food preparation, cooking and presenting high quality dishes for StarBistro
  • Manage and train learners, building their confidence, skills and autonomy; plan and prepare learner daily work activity and integrate them in the busy working environment
  • Maintain the highest standard of cleanliness and kitchen hygiene
  • Help place orders from suppliers
  • Contribute to menu offering and event planning as required
  • Monitor portion and waste control to maintain profit margins

Whilst we would expect you to have a NVQ Level 2 Catering or City & Guilds qualification, or equivalent and have worked as an assistant chef, don’t worry if you haven’t got experience of all the primary tasks, especially mentoring young people with disabilities. We’re experts in this field and will be happy to teach and support you.
