Ella’s story

Meet Ella, a determined and ambitious young woman studying at National Star. On the Personal Development for Positive Contribution pathway, she is building independence, developing confident communication skills, and advocating for inclusion.

Ella’s journey with National Star

Ella is a bright and determined young woman, studying at National Star. Her journey on the Personal Development for Positive Contribution pathway is showcased by her confident communication, advocacy for inclusion, and growing independence. Always with a smile and a strong sense of purpose, Ella is recognised for her intelligence, warmth, and willingness to take on new challenges.

Ella is non-verbal and uses an Augmentative and Alternative Communication device (AAC) to communicate. She is also a wheelchair user and navigates the campus independently. Her communication skills continue to grow as she engages with unfamiliar people across college. She is confident in using her device to express her opinions, ask questions, and make sure her needs are understood, showcasing strong self-advocacy.

A leader in action

Ella took on the role of supporting visitors with directions from reception to the Manor during the Reverse Job Fair. This gave her chance to communicate with a wide range of people in a busy environment. This allowed her to prove her ability to work as part of a team and communicate with strangers.

Ella took centre stage at The Festival of Education, where she joined a panel of students to discuss inclusive education. Chaired by comedian and author Francesca Martinez, the panel explored how mainstream education could better support all learners. Ella explained that while her body may not always do what she wants it to, her mind is full of ability. She said that the education system need to recognise the potential in all students. Her advocacy was passionate, intelligent, and deeply impactful.

Physical development and rebound therapy

Rebound therapy sessions allow Ella to build her physical strength, balance, and coordination. She is supported by staff and hoisted from her wheelchair onto the trampoline. Rebound sessions include a variety of movements that engage her core and improve her posture.

Extra exercises involve rolling and coordinated movement. These support her motor skills and body-brain connectivity. During these sessions, Ella communicates without her AAC device. She uses a mixture of facial expressions, eye and body movements, and head positioning. This allows her to ask for help and guide staff through her preferred routines. Ella plays an active part in her physiotherapy, supporting both her health and independence.

Looking ahead

Ella’s timetable combines communication development, advocacy opportunities, and development of her independence skills. All of which support her long-term goals to become an active, independent student. This is demonstrated when she seeks out emotional wellbeing support. and is growing in confidence when building relationships with both students and staff.

Ella is working towards learning outcomes that include:

  • Developing her understanding of time, money, and measurement, supporting her independence in everyday life.
  • Working toward a qualification in life skills, including teamwork and contributing to group activities.
  • Building confidence in communication, especially in unfamiliar environments and with people she does not know well.
  • Engaging in consistent, meaningful interactions using her AAC device.
  • Actively participating in physical therapy, including rebound, to improve strength and mobility while supporting her overall wellbeing.

Ella’s journey is one of strength, self-expression, and continuing to build self-belief. Her presence lights up the campus. Her advocacy, determination, and daily achievements, allow her to continue to break down barriers. Building a future where everyone is seen, heard, and included.
