Archie’s story

Archie, a second-year work-based learning student, discovered a passion for cooking at StarBistro, leading to a work placement at The Long Table, where he’s thriving in a supportive community kitchen.

Archie’s journey with National Star

Archie, a second-year student at National Star, has developed a passion and skill for working in the kitchen during his time at StarBistro. This hands-on experience has now led to a successful work placement at The Long Table in Stroud.

When Archie first joined National Star, he was eager to explore outdoor work opportunities but had never considered working indoors. Nervous, he began a one-day-a-week placement at the StarBistro, supported by his job coach, Mike. After just one shift, Archie found his calling in the kitchen.

Over two years, Archie has mastered essential kitchen skills, including safe knife techniques, pot washing, and various dish preparation. He’s made weekly student meals like croque monsieur, a giant toasted club sandwich, sourdough pizzas with various toppings, and a mac ‘n’ cheese stuffed burger with salad and chips.

A new opportunity at The Long Table

In September, an opportunity became available at The Long Table in Brimscombe, Stroud – a community-focused kitchen with a mission to “feed change, one bite at a time.” After discussing the opportunity with Mike, Archie joined the placement.

Founded in 2018, The Long Table is about more than just food. They focus on five top principles; agriculture, cooking, community, dining and education. Every hot meal they serve is “pay-as-you-can,” ensuring accessibility for everyone – it’s about dignity, equality, and a community supporting neighbours who need a little help.

Robert Haymon-Collins, Lead of Strategic Projects at The Long Table and a Trustee at National Star, has been instrumental in securing placements for students. He shared:

“I aim for a world where community is at the heart of everything we do. Earlier this year, we faced losing our mill due to a change in landlord. Our community stood with us, campaigned, and now we proudly own the mill. This is the power of community. We’re thrilled to partner with National Star, providing students like Archie the chance to grow and contribute through work placements.”

This is testament to the heart of the Long Table, as their head chef began as an apprentice and, through hard work and support, has built a future he is proud of. Now focusing on feeding his community with locally sourced products, while also sharing his knowledge with others.

Archie’s experience

Archie’s placement involves tasks such as pot washing, batch cooking, prepping takeaway orders, and learning to create dishes using locally sourced ingredients. Reflecting on his experience, Archie said:

“I’ve really enjoyed working here – I even learned to make a huge batch of mac and cheese! I feel like part of the team.”

The team at The Long Table has welcomed Archie warmly, treating him with respect and encouraging his confidence. Excited to continue, Archie has extended his placement into the new year.

Mike, Archie’s job coach, shared his pride in seeing students grow:

“The best part of my job is watching students develop from when they start college into skilled, confident young adults ready to contribute to their communities. Many students come to us with limited life skills. Teaching them essentials like using public transport can open a whole new world to them. Sadly, some students have never been given the chance to work, as it’s often assumed they can’t. At National Star, we show them what’s possible.”
