Ben's future is brighter thanks to the work skills learnt at National Star
Ben is realising his potential to live as independently as possible after completing a work skills programme with National Star.
He had the confidence to begin his work placement at a local cafe after receiving support to develop his employability, team-working and communication skills.
Job Mentor Support
Our support for Ben continued on a weekly basis. As a result Ben became less concerned before attending his weekly placement at the Star Anise cafe.
Ben, who has autism, developed a real understanding of teamwork. He made sure there was always pristine crockery, cutlery and glasses available for colleagues. Therefore Ben quickly washed, dried and put away dishes when they were returned to the kitchen.
Personal Development Award
Ben’s commitment to his placement earned him a highly commended personal development award at this year’s National Star student leavers’ ceremony. More importantly, Ben continues his working at the cafe one morning and one afternoon a week after leaving college.
‘Star Anise has given Ben a purpose and he feels valued. He absolutely loves it. There’s a calmness to him now which has come from him working alongside his colleagues and customers,’ said Terry, Ben’s stepfather.
