National Star College at Hereford
National Star College at Hereford has been designed for people with complex and multiple learning disabilities. We offer two different pathways – Entry and Foundation – which provide a sensory-based curriculum and a high level of support. This enables students to develop skills in social interaction, self-awareness and self-expression, meeting their goals and preparing them for the best that life can offer.
The Entry Pathway has a strong emphasis on developing communication skills, problem solving and team working in daily life. The programme is designed to support and develop personal aspirations, with a focus on self-expression, sensory awareness, cause and effect, social interaction and self-confidence.
Students will receive dedicated time with their tutor, when they will work on activities and themed projects. Making choices and sharing opinions is an important element, and additional learning takes place through a choice of creative modules, such as Art, Dance, Drama, Music, Cooking, Horticulture and much more. Students are able to link their learning to a qualification at Entry Level One, and are supported in developing functional core skills through our integrated delivery models of practice.
Sensory environments are used to meet the needs of students with profound and multiple disabilities, and, where appropriate, are integrated with specialist therapies tailored to individual students. Teaching is centred around what engages an individual, and utilises a range of evidence-based approaches.
Consistent support is provided alongside a curriculum that is focused on developing each student’s independence, life skills, and communication / social skills to prepare for life after college. Relationships with parents, carers, guardians and statutory organisations is key to enable successful transition into adult life.
The Foundation Pathway is a flexible programme offering opportunities to develop personal and social skills, work skills, literacy, numeracy and communication skills. It supports students working at Entry Level Two or Three who may not be able to take up a mainstream offer.
Communication, making personal choices, team working and development of effective skills for learning and work are embedded themes in our Foundation Pathway. Students are encouraged to make a positive contribution to the college community and gain skills that will support them in becoming active citizens in their adult lives.
Acquiring employment skills is core for students on our Entry and Foundation pathways to support their progression to paid or voluntary employment. Longer-term goals and work skills are developed in a range of situations relevant to the individual. Young people are supported to access work placements and community opportunities, which enable them to develop skills and make choices relevant to their transition on from college.
Health and therapies
Our personalised Entry and Foundation pathways aim to maintain or improve functional performance and increase independence and autonomy. This includes supporting students in developing their health management skills to enable a healthy lifestyle and ownership of their health and wellbeing wherever possible.
