Work placements

Work placements

The work placements we offer at National Star are driven by our aim to support students in making that crucial step into paid or voluntary employment when they leave college.

Work placements are arranged by our job mentors, who have forged strong links with both local and national employers. Job mentors arrange the placement, support students during it and enable them to transition into employment after their programme.

How does it work?

  • Students in their final year at college or studying our Skills for Work programme may be referred to the job mentors, who will assess them to determine their needs, capabilities and interests.
  • The job mentors liaise with appropriate employers to arrange a work placement. These typically last for four to six weeks, for half a day a week.
  • On a placement, job mentors offer varying levels of support and set students realistic targets that will develop general and job-specific work skills across one or more sectors, such as catering and administration.

For students seeking a job, completing a real work placement can provide them with the support, skills and confidence they need to make the transition from student to employee, and each year, many go on to achieve just that.
