National Star College to host Skills for Work open day (2015)

At National Star we know how important it is to offer young people in Gloucestershire the opportunity to gain the skills and experience they need to help secure a job. That’s why we’re holding a ‘Give It a Go’ open morning tomorrow at the college (Wednesday 22 April 2015 ),  to explain our range of courses.

The Skills for Work event is being staged at our Ullenwood campus, and will run from 10am-12.30pm.

Skills for Work is open to young people from Gloucestershire aged 16-25 years, and is based with local employers with support from specialist job mentors.  Young people will be able to try out taster sessions, including baking at the StarBistro, designing and printing a mug at StarPrint and shadowing learners working in administration and retail at the college.

‘We are looking for young people who want to learn “on the job” rather than in a classroom. We work individually with people to build on their strengths rather than focus on the things they can’t do, said Kathryn Rudd, our Principal at National Star.

What sets our programme apart is that each intern has their own personal Job Mentor.

‘We work closely with employers to find suitable work placements for the interns,’ said Mike Youart, Senior Job Mentor. ‘The Job Mentors work with the intern helping them settle in and only step back once they are confident of their role and the work involved. What National Star aims to do is provide sustainable work.’

The year-long programme is focused on experience in the work place. Interns can work in catering, office administration, printing or retail. We’ll also provide lots of information about our Steps into Work programme, which supports adults with disabilities.
