National Star hits £1 million mark in public appeal target

National Star has hit the £1 million mark in its public appeal target to support young people with complex disabilities.
In just six months, the charity has raised two-thirds of it £1.5m public appeal that will see a new specialist residence at its campus in Ullenwood.
The £6.2 million project will provide specially adapted accommodation for young people with disabilities that fully meets their complex needs and provides stimulating spaces to live, learn and relax.
Deputy Chief Executive Peter Horne, who is leading the project, said the charity is bowled over by the support.
‘To raise £1 million in six months is extraordinary, especially in these challenging times. We’re overwhelmed with the support we have received so far from so many trusts, organisations and individuals,’ said Mr Horne. ‘We can’t thank them enough.’
The charity now needs to raise the remaining £500,000. Construction work is due to be completed in July with students moving in in September this year.
‘By supporting our appeal, you will be helping us build a brighter future for scores of young people with complex disabilities,’ said Mr Horne. ‘Every gift will make a difference and is greatly appreciated.’
Each of the 13 bedrooms, which includes an independence and assessment suite, will have specialist overhead tracking hoists and ensuite facilities ensuring that privacy and dignity is maintained for those with high levels of personal care needs. There will be wide corridors that can easily accommodate large electric wheelchairs ensuring everyone can easily move around their home.
The accommodation has been designed by Cheltenham architects coombes:everitt and is being constructed by regional contractor Speller Metcalfe.
