National Star welcomes government report recommendations
National Star, a national centre of excellence supporting young people with disabilities and learning difficulties, has welcomed the recommendation in an independent government review for the creation of a national leadership board for children and young people with high needs, reporting to the Minister for Children and Families.
National Star also supports the recommendations within the independent review, by Dame Christine Lenehan, for closer working relationships between Local Authorities and providers to ensure that all decisions have the young person’s best interests at its heart.
“We’re very happy to see that the report recognises that there are a small group of young people who have high needs for whom residential provision is the most appropriate,” said David Ellis, Chief Executive at National Star.
“For these individuals a residential setting can offer extended learning opportunities, respite for families and opportunities to learn independence skills while addressing the young people’s health and care needs.”
National Star also supports the recommendation that professionals within mainstream schools and colleges develop their skills to meet the needs of other groups of young people with SEND. As a national centre of excellence, National Star would be happy to support individuals develop these skills.
