Teacher Training

Award in Education and Training (QCF), Level 3 – 12 credits

The Level 3 Award in Education and Training is an introduction to teaching that will give an insight into the roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training, how to plan and deliver inclusive teaching sessions and how to assess and give constructive feedback. It prepares learners for teaching in a wide range of contexts and does not require them to be in a teaching role. This course is an introduction to teaching.

What is involved?

The qualification covers the knowledge and skills required by teachers in the further education and skills sector, such as:

  • The roles, responsibilities and relationships in education and training
  • Inclusive teaching and learning approaches
  • Assessment of learners
  • Facilitating learning and development for individuals
  • Facilitating learning and development in groups
  • Understanding principles and practices of assessment

There is no requirement for you to be in a teaching role to undertake this qualification. Assessment will be via written assignments and a Micro teach. The course duration is one evening per week over 9 weeks, with a requirement to attend all taught sessions.

Certificate in Education and Training (QCF), Level 4 – 36 credits

The Level 4 Certificate in Education and Training is a first stage teaching qualification which has a teaching / training practice requirement. It is an ‘in service’ qualification designed for those working or wishing to work as teachers / trainers in England. All candidates, whether pre-service or in-service must have access to 30 hours of teaching. This qualification is also suitable for those delivering education and training in any learning environment. Candidates who successfully complete this qualification will have a fundamental understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a teacher / trainer in relation to legislation, equality, diversity, inclusivity and meeting the needs of learners. They will be able to use initial and diagnostic assessments and plan and deliver inclusive teaching and learning. They will also be able to assess learning and use appropriate resources to support effective learning.

This is a 36 credit qualification comprising mandatory and optional units.

Mandatory units

  • Planning to meet the needs of learners in education and training
  • Assessing learners in education and training
  • Using resources for education and training
  • Delivering education and training

The course runs on one evening per week over 20 weeks. The course is assessed by assignments and four observations of teaching practice.

Diploma in Education and Training (QCF), Level 5 – 120 credits

The Level 5 Diploma in Education and Training is a teaching qualification which has a teaching / training practice requirement. It is an ‘in-service’ qualification designed for those working or wishing to work as teachers / trainers in England. It extends into investigation and research in current practice, theories and models relating to education and training. Throughout the programme candidates will demonstrate their ability to transfer the findings of their research into their own practice. The qualification supports candidates to take an analytical and practical approach to all aspects of planning, delivering and assessing inclusive teaching and learning. While doing this, candidates will embed theories and principles in education and training and demonstrate them in their practice.

Candidates will also carry out research into professionalism in education and training policies and consider their impact on their role and their accountability as a teacher / trainer. To achieve the Level 5 Diploma, candidates must achieve a minimum of 120 credits. 75 credits must be achieved from the mandatory units, plus a minimum of 45 credits from optional units. There is a requirement of a minimum of 100 hours of teaching practice and a minimum of eight teaching practice observations, which must reach the required standard. The course runs on one evening a week for 18 months.

Diploma in Teaching Disabled Learners (QCF), Level 5 – 45 credits

This qualification is a stand-alone qualification for those who have a teaching qualification and wish to upgrade their skills in working with learners with disabilities or learning difficulties. It is taught over six days in blocks of three two-day sessions, and scheduled at times that suit individual organisations. Please note that there is a minimum requirement of eight candidates in order to run a course at your organisation. The course is delivered through activity-based learning, three assignments, four teaching and learning observations and a professional practice portfolio.  Prospective candidates must be delivering 50 hours of teaching to learners with learning difficulties or disabilities – either in discreet or inclusive provision.
