As Joe reaches his final year at National Star, much of our focus has been on supporting his transition into life after college. Joe has always expressed a desire to work in the future, although he was unsure what this might look like. Through sessions such as Life Skills, Planning for My Future, and Speech and Language Therapy, we have been exploring how Joe might enjoy and structure his week once he leaves college.

BBC Points West visit

During this process, we identified Joe’s strong interest in media, particularly his enthusiasm for watching daily weather forecasts. Building on this passion, Joe was offered an exciting opportunity to visit BBC Points West, where he met weather presenter Ian Fergusson to learn more about what goes into presenting the weather.

In preparation for the visit, Joe worked closely with his Personalised Learning Coordinator and Speech and Language Therapist to develop questions and think about the information he wanted to find out.

This preparation has had a really positive impact on Joe’s communication skills, and boosted his confidence in meeting new people and pursuing his interests.

Achieving his goals

Following the visit, Joe proudly shared his experience with his Life Skills group the next day, a huge milestone for him. His enthusiasm and independence in sharing his news highlighted just how far he has come.

We are so proud of Joe for stepping out of his comfort zone and working on his preparation for adulthood. Stay tuned for National Star’s very own weather reports coming soon.
