In recent years, awareness and understanding of neurodiversity have grown significantly. However, there is still progress to be made in celebrating the unique strengths of neurodivergent individuals. National Star is committed to creating an inclusive environment and advocating for neurodiversity not just during National Neurodiversity Week, but all year round.

As part of this commitment, National Star Job Coach Mike and Marketing Manager Holly attended a screening of The Stupid Boy at The Long Table in Stroud last Saturday, an event held as part of the Stroud Film Festival. Following the screening, the film’s writer and director, Phil Dunn, participated in a live Q&A session with Edith Bowman, owner of the ‘Soundtracking with Edith Bowman’ podcast. They discussed insights into the inspiration behind the film and the lessons he has learned about the strengths and perspectives of neurodivergent individuals.

One audience member, who identifies as autistic, expressed how the film resonated deeply, stating that it accurately depicted the daily challenges, sensory experiences, and unique ways neurodivergent individuals navigate the world. National Star Job Coach Mike echoed this sentiment, saying: “It is refreshing to see an actor portray autism in such an honest way.”

National Star continues to champion inclusivity through initiatives like its Neurodivergent Forum, led by Stuart, Specialist Input Curriculum Manager shared: ‘I feel privileged to have the opportunity to lead the Neurodivergence forum at National Star. Ensuring that as a college, we are doing everything we can to support our students.’ The forum meets monthly to explore ways the organisation can evolve and ensure a welcoming environment for all.

By supporting events like the Stroud Film Festival and fostering internal discussions on inclusivity, National Star remains dedicated to celebrating neurodiversity and advocating for a more understanding society.
