Four final-year students from National Star College recently visited Cardiff Metropolitan University to take part in a special Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) group session designed for young people preparing for life beyond school.

The AAC group was organised by Ria Bayliss and Dr Katherine Broomfield from the Centre for Speech, Hearing and Communication Research at Cardiff Metropolitan University. The programme brings together young AAC users to explore future goals, communication skills and the transition from secondary education into adulthood.

Students from both National Star’s Ullenwood and Mamhilad campuses joined the session as guest speakers, meeting with pupils from local schools who use high-tech AAC systems. The event provided an opportunity for students to share their experiences of college life, discuss their aspirations and answer questions about what comes next after school.

When asked, ‘What did you think of the group?’ Morgan replied, ‘Crazy. Exciting’

The visit was a valuable peer-to-peer learning experience, enabling younger AAC users to connect with role models who have already navigated many of the challenges and opportunities associated with transitioning into further education.

Speech and language therapist, Victoria Taylor shared: ‘The visit was a fantastic opportunity for three final year students at National Star to discuss their learner journey as well as current hopes and aspirations with younger AAC users who are transitioning out of secondary school and thinking about what their future may look like.’

National Star students demonstrated outstanding communication, self-advocacy and confidence throughout the session, showcasing the powerful role AAC can play in helping individuals express themselves, build relationships and pursue their ambitions.

The event highlighted the importance of creating opportunities for AAC users to connect, support one another and build a strong community as they move towards adulthood and greater independence.
