Supporting the next generation of health and social care professionals

Hannah Hughes, Service Manager at National Star in Worcester, has been working closely with Health and Social Care students from Heart of Worcestershire College, helping them gain valuable, real-world experience within the SEND sector.

Through this partnership, Hannah has delivered educational talks, hosted student placements, and recently attended the college’s end-of-year showcase, where learners presented projects inspired by their experiences with National Star.

Hannah shared: ‘It’s been wonderful to work collaboratively with the Level 1 Health and Social Care learners, inspiring the younger generation by showcasing the work we do to benefit our learners’ lives.Providing these students with the opportunity to experience real workplace expectations and put their studies into practice has really brought out their confidence.’

The collaboration has had a significant impact on both staff and students at the college. Charlie, who is a Level 1 Health and Social Care Tutor, said: ‘National Star have been a big support for our Level 1 Care course. After running small group tours of their fantastic facilities and Hannah delivering a workshop at Heart of Worcestershire, several students wanted more hands-on experience to deepen their understanding of the sector.’

This year, eight students completed two-week work experience placements as part of their ongoing studies. All of them had a great experience and have been able to share their learning back in the classroom.

Students themselves have also benefitted enormously. Lily, who completed work experience at National Star, said: ’My experience at National Star was amazing! I was so nervous, but Hannah and the staff were so welcoming and supportive; they made me feel there was no need to be nervous. I’d say to anyone interested in this sector to get work experience with them. I enjoyed it so much!’

In addition to short-term placements, National Star is also supporting more in-depth experiences, including a Level 3 student undertaking a six-week placement (one day per week), further strengthening links between education and practice.

Earlier this month, Hannah was invited to attend a student showcase morning, where learners presented work inspired by National Star. This included sensory boards, communication cards, and projects exploring the organisation’s impact, demonstrating the knowledge and skills they have developed through the partnership.

Hannah continues to play an ongoing role in preparing students for future careers as part of their employability development.
