Cooking up success

Students making food in StarBistro

National Star learners have been developing their skills in customer service and hospitality thanks to hands-on work placements at StarBistro in Ullenwood.

Due to COVID-19, StarBistro has been closed to members of the public since March. However, the social enterprise continues to prepare and cook a variety of tasty treats for on-site staff while providing work skills students with opportunities to build their confidence and learn practical skills for employment.

First-year student Will has been working in StarBistro as part of his Skills for Work programme.

‘It’s been really fun,’ said Will.

‘I’ve been working on the till and serving staff, which I love. I’ve also been washing up and putting food in containers for people to take away. I’m working out what I would like to do after college, so this placement has been really good.’

Simon Dean, StarBistro and Catering Manager, added:

‘A lot of people forget that while StarBistro is a training area, it’s also a real hospitality environment with real customers. Despite COVID-19, we have been able to continue the education of students, giving them the practical experiences and skills they need for the future.’

In October, StarBistro was voted Café of the Year in the SoGlos Lifestyle Awards 2020.

‘It means so much to both the staff and the students who work so hard, especially considering the difficult year we’ve had,’ said Simon.

‘We’re so grateful that the public has voted for us, and we can’t wait to welcome them back to StarBistro at some point in the future.’
