Students thrive at National Star

National Star has achieved double Outstanding for its care and education provision.

Inspectors from Ofsted and the Care Quality Commission rated National Star Outstanding across every category. It is the first college in the country, under the new Ofsted regime, to gain a double Outstanding in every category in Ofsted and CQC.

In the Ofsted report National Star was praised for its very high standards, innovative working practices and its ‘excellent involvement of students in the life of the college’.

‘Teachers, learning support assistants and other staff prepare students for adult life very effectively and consequently the quality of their lives improves. Students recognise their potential to develop and follow their interests,’ the Ofsted report states.

‘Teachers and managers have very high expectations and ambitions for students that result in them becoming more independent and able to influence their future lives.’

Inspectors praised National Star for its rigorous safeguarding. ‘A relentless focus on working and living safely and healthily ensures that students are protected appropriately in education, residential and community settings,’ the report states.

The Outstanding Ofsted rating comes within weeks of National Star at Ullenwood receiving an Outstanding rating for its care from the Care Quality Commission (CQC).

The CQC report stated: ‘People and carers spoke overwhelmingly of the positive support, guidance and healthcare interventions people had received. They were full of praise for the staff in terms of their kindness and compassion.’

The inspectors stated that the transitions to and from National Star ‘remained excellent, with the college increasing the number of visits arranged to destination providers to support young people to make meaningful choices post–college’.

‘Everyone at National Star is incredibly proud of this double Outstanding rating. Not only have we maintained our ratings for both our care and our education provision but we have done so to new, more robust criteria,’ said David Ellis, Chief Executive of National Star.

‘Our students and residents are at the heart of everything we do and these two inspections are proof, if proof was needed, that we are a centre of national excellence.

‘We can only provide this outstanding service thanks to the dedication and professionalism of our team and to the generous support we receive from the community. The combined result is that we are making a huge difference to the lives of the young people we support.’
