An inspirational place to work

Matt joined National Star in 2018 after being inspired by the charity’s mission to support people with disabilities to realise their potential.

‘National Star aligned very closely with my personal values, and after visiting the campus at Ullenwood and seeing the inspiring work that takes place here every day, I knew then that this was the place I wanted to work at and it would be a job I could be proud of.’

Matt has worked in IT for the majority of his career. Before joining National Star he was based in London.

‘The atmosphere at Ullenwood is extremely different and far more pleasant than what I’d previously been used to, as I’m sure you can imagine!’

Career progression

‘When I initially joined National Star’s IT team, I performed basic second line IT service desk duties as an Engineer. Since then, I have been promoted to the Senior Service Desk Engineer and have taken on additional responsibilities, such as managing budgets, further developing the service desk software and providing support and advice to junior members of the team. There is further for me to go and even more room to progress within the IT services team.’

Training and development

Matt has been supported to undertake additional IT training for his role when required.

‘I have taken a Microsoft Windows Server Networking course and also completed a course in ITIL v4 – a framework of best practices for service desk management. This has proven invaluable in my day-to-day operations and helps me place emphasis on supporting our service desk customers at National Star.

A rewarding role like no other

‘For me, it’s knowing that the work we do, despite being behind the scenes, truly does have a vastly positive impact on our young learners and residents. I can play an active part in enabling the positive experiences they can have while learning and living here.
