National Star in Hereford students Josh and Louis are learning skills for life after college thanks to a supportive work placement at Halo Leisure in Leominster.

The duo spend one morning a week working at the community leisure centre, helping fitness staff to keep gym equipment clean, pricing up swimming products and restocking food and drink items in the leisure centre’s ‘grab and go’ fridges.

They wear their staff uniform with pride and take great care with all the tasks they are allocated to complete.
Louis said: ’I was a bit nervous to be honest when I first started but I kept reminding myself that I was doing really well. We’re getting to know the customers and learning how to communicate with different people.’

Josh said: ‘I am happy to help out and like keeping the leisure centre clean and tidy.’

Halo Leisure Fitness Manager Denise Goodchop says: ‘Will and Josh have become more confident and are always happy, smiley and pleasant. They clearly love their work placement.

‘They do a thorough job of cleaning the gym equipment each week and have the confidence to chat to our regular customers. They have mastered how to use the pricing gun, when labelling new swim products for sale and are using their numeracy skills to check the sell by dates of products sold in our grab and go fridges.
‘As a company we have a strong diversity and inclusion agenda, and it has been a pleasure to support the National Star students to increase their skills and self-esteem.’
